Killay Community Council

The Council is non-political and meetings are held at the information centre in Killay Square on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm. All meetings are open to the public and minuted. Minutes can be viewed at the Information Centre or here. Records of meetings are kept with the City and County Archivist at County Hall, and accounts are open for inspection once a year, once deposited with the District Auditor.

The Killay Community Council is made up of fifteen councillors, covering three wards of Killay, North, South and West. All community councillors are voluntary. The clerk to the council, who is part /time receives a salary.

The function of Community Councils is varied and has not been associated with one definite role in society. One of the most important tasks is to act as “a voice of the local people” in terms of discussing with local authorities and other public bodies, the views and ideas of the community about local issues, thus raising awareness of any potential problems and how they may be solved.

Local authorities have an equally important duty to Community Councils, to assist with their funding and contribute to work on various administrative matters. In addition, local authorities have the responsibility of providing feedback to Community Councils, regarding issues such as expenditure within the locality, how local services are to be delivered as well as any other relevant matters.

The aim of Killay Community Council, is to provide and improve the community with services which your city councillors cannot always achieve; items such as inspecting and reporting bad pavements, pot-holes in roads, overgrown hedges and trees, broken lamp standards etc.

If you have any local concerns don't hesitate to contact your local councillors who may be able to help with advice or put you in touch with the relevant persons. Don't forget there is FREE legal advice available at the Information Centre every other Thursday.

Achievements

We have provided in various parts of Killay extra litterbins and seats, are involved in the greening of Killay marsh and fully support Glamorgan Wildlife Trust in their various projects in the area. Ensured our play area at Woodcote was re-instated and monitor the upkeep. Placed a BMX track at Killay Marsh, which is utilized regularly by all ages.

This year Killay won Silver in the Swansea In Bloom Class 7b, for large communities,  and has twice previously won Gold in the competition.

Killay Community Council tries to donate sums of money to all local charities i.e. Killay luncheon club, Killay Scouts and Guides, Pensioners groups and many others. We also organize an annual coffee morning to raise funds for chosen charities. Contact us to enquire about donations.
